Bonne Terre Mine is without a doubt one of the most unusual places to dive in the United States. The Billion Gallon Lake is illuminated with over 500,000 watts of lighting, a total of twenty-four dive trails have been laid out in the lake, taking the diver through mammoth archways, past beautiful calcium falls, around gargantuan pillars and to the many abandoned mining artifacts. Depths of the dive tours average between 40 to 60 feet. Divers are toured through the mine in groups of ten by two specially trained dive guides. Super 80 cubic ft. aluminum tanks are provided for each diver. Dive lights are not permitted in the lake, because they detract from the natural beauty of the illuminated surroundings. Power inflator are required on all BC's. The Billion Gallon Lake is 58 (Degree F) and not affected by outside temperatures, there are no thermo clines. Air temperature is 62 (Degree F) year round. Lighting on the rock formations is spectacular. One can descend to 80 feet and look up to see divers silhouetted against a rainbow. Man carved pillars grace the entire Billion Gallon Lake. Truk LagoonThursday, October 9th – Monday, 20th, 2008 Protected from wind and ocean swells, this lagoon has often been described as s placid lake in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Truk Lagoon, also known as Chuuk, offers the greatest concentration of wrecks anywhere in the world. The number, variety and size of the wrecks and the spectacular marine life that grows on them are unequalled. Truck Lagoon’s sunken fleet has become the standard by which all other wreck dives are measured. In February of 1944, Japan’s fortress of Truk Lagoon was attacked by Task Force 58 – a group of nine aircraft carriers and related cruisers, destroyers and subs. During two days and one night, planes from these aircraft carriers conducted continuous bombing, strafing and torpedo runs on ships anchored in the lagoon. More than 400 Japanese planes were wiped out and some 50 – 60 ships were believed sunk. Those two days of devastating air assault created what is today know as the “Ghost Fleet of Truk Lagoon.” During the past 50 years, these wrecks remained undisturbed on the bottom of the lagoon. A combination of unusually warm tropical water, prolific marine life and lagoon currents have served as a natural incubator transforming these lifeless hulks into magnificently beautiful artificial reefs. Of the 35 that have been charted and explored, two dozen are dived regularly. Each wreck has its own personality and contains its own treasure of cargo. One could devote a lifetime to diving these wrecks and still not see all of them. Some of these shipwrecks have greater concentrations of soft corals, hard corals, sponges and marine life than the neighboring coral reefs. These wrecks are truly the most beautiful in the world. GuamGuam’s Apra Harbor is the only place in the world where divers can truly dive a shipwreck from World War I and a shipwreck from World War II on one tank of air. On April 7th 1917, during World War I, the SMS Cormoran, a 335 foot German auxiliary cruiser was intentionally sunk by her Captain as the Americans attempted to board her. The German sailors that survived became the first American WW I prisoners of war. The second shipwreck in Apra Harbor is the Tokai Maru, a 464 foot World War II Japanese tanker. She was torpedoed on August 27, 1944 by the US submarine Snapper while anchored in Guam’s harbor. She took nearly 24 hours before slipping below the waves. As the Tokai Maru came to her final resting place, her hull was punctured by the SMS Cormoran and they remain today touching each other at a depth of 100 feet.
